Makurazaki is located in the southwest of Kagoshima Prefecture. Tea cultivation in Makurazaki started around the year 1897, and it has developed into a region for producing tea that takes advantage of the warm climate. It has won tea producing region awards at national tea competitions and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award.

Kiyoka cultivar is characterized by its fragrance. Kiyoka was crossbred from its parent strains: Saemidori, known for its strong umami, and FYZ-41, recognized for its potent floral scent. When brewed, Kiyoka exhibits a sweet floral aroma combined with a distinct umami taste. In the world of sencha, there are a few varieties that have floral aroma, but there are others. However, most of them are focused on bringing out the strong floral aroma and have a relatively low umami profile. However, Kiyoka is a rare variety that offers a subtle floral fragrance while maintaining a solid umami presence. It can be said that this variety has skillfully inherited the characteristics of both its parent strains.

To emphasize its floral notes, this tea is produced using a light steaming process and it offers a unique blend of the fresh grassiness of green tea combined with floral notes. This differs from the floral aromas found in black or oolong teas.
